Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reveal that some Members of Parliament (MPs) are involve in illegal mining, known as galamsey.

During a two-day emergency parliamentary session focused on the galamsey crisis, Bagbin urged MPs to cease any involvement in these illegal activities, emphasising the critical role Parliament must play in setting a positive example.

“Who among you is participating in galamsey? If we conduct a census, we will catch some of you, and the public knows it.It’s not that they don’t know—they do know that some of you are involve,” he stated.

Further, Bagbin implored MPs to refrain from seeking financial support from those engaged in illegal mining for their campaigns and to avoid soliciting their votes.

“Let your work speak for itself. It’s truly disgraceful that we’ve reached this point. Just look at the state of our water—it’s appalling.”

The session highlighted the government’s ongoing failure to effectively address the galamsey issue, with heated debates from both sides of the House underscoring the urgency of finding a solution.
