Catholic Archdiocese Holds Protest Walk Against Illegal Mining

Written by Sarah Boye

On October 11, 2024, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra held a protest walk against illegal mining, following a “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.

During the service, Rev Father Godwin Fiawoyi called for divine intervention to combat the environmental damage caused by galamsey, urging the congregation to remain committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

The service attracted a large gathering of Catholic worshippers, environmental activists, and members of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” group holding placards that demanded an end to illegal mining activities.

This demonstration is part of a larger movement by civil society and religious organisations to address the growing environmental challenges associated with illegal mining.
