Big Ghun, a multi-award-winning director and filmmaker from Ghana, has counseled Ghanaian filmmakers to broaden their creativity and focus on the international market as opposed to creating content specifically for “Ghanaians.”
Big Ghun stressed in an interview with JoyNews that the lack of Ghanaian filmmakers and directors on international platforms is worrying.
He continued by saying that the emphasis on producing content only for local audiences has stifled the career advancement of many filmmakers.
Big Ghun also made note of the fact that Ghanaian filmmakers have a propensity to oppose advancing their profession and learning new things.
“I wish other Ghanaians were also succeeding on these platforms. The world standard, the Ghanaian standard, and the Nigerian standard shouldn’t be distinguished from one another, he stated.
At the AMVCA 2023 in Nigeria, Big Ghun most recently won the MTF Filmmaker award for his film “LEAKED.” Emmanuel Nartey was the only Ghanaian to receive an award this year despite being nominated both last year and this year. He is currently formally a part of the Nigerian Film Guild.
For Big Ghun, receiving this honor has been a realization of a dream. He declared his desire to one day take part in illustrious occasions like the Oscars and Cannes.
