The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to restructuring its parliamentary leadership.
Addressing supporters at a campaign rally in Ajumako Enyan Essiam in the Central Region on Thursday, November 21, he defended the changes as a strategic move to boost the party’s performance in Parliament and dismissed criticisms of the decision.
Further, Asiedu Nketiah acknowledged the backlash but highlighted the positive results of the reshuffle.
“When we made the changes in Parliament, the criticism was intense. Everyone blamed me. But we stood firm because we believed in the new leaders’ potential. If asked to replace them now, would you? I know you wouldn’t because they have proven themselves,” he said.
Additionally, he compared the leadership transition to a relay race where runners pass the baton when tired.
“The old leaders played their part, but it was time to pass the baton. We gave it to Ato Forson, and he has exceeded our expectations. He has made the party more attractive. We thank God for guiding us,” he added.
Earlier this year, the NDC replaced Haruna Iddrisu (Tamale South MP), James Klutse Avedzi (Ketu North MP), and Muntaka Mubarak (Asawase MP) as minority leader, deputy minority leader, and minority whip, respectively.
While the decision triggered mixed reactions, with some questioning its timing ahead of the 2024 general elections, Asiedu Nketiah expressed confidence in the move’s long-term benefits.
