“My Arrest And Deportation From Ghana Traumatic”-Shalimar

Written by Sarah Boye

Spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, has described her arrest, and deportation from Ghana as a deeply traumatic.

Reflecting on her detention during an interview on Joy News Abbiusi revealed,

“I didn’t understand the severity of the situation in Ghana until I saw the conditions in the cells and the people detained there. Although it was a horrible experience, it opened my eyes to a grim reality.”

Further , she also pushed back against allegations of forging documents to remain in Ghana.

“I urge people to think critically. If I forged documents, why did the charges against me get dropped, and where is the evidence? The court saw no proof of forgery. I obtained my permit through an official immigration officer, so if forgery occurred, wouldn’t it implicate someone within their own system? The dismissal of the charges speaks volumes,” she stated

Additionally, she also called on the international community to hold the Ghanaian government accountable for her treatment. She described the sense of powerlessness as one of the most challenging aspects, along with facing deportation and imprisonment.

“The entire experience was traumatic, but I held onto hope, believing justice would prevail. Knowing I had people fighting for me kept me strong and optimistic,” she said.

Authorities initially arrested Abbiusi for allegedly using forged documents to obtain a residence permit as a student at Ghana Christian University College. Although the Ghana Immigration Service dropped the charges and granted her bail, officials rearrested and deported her on December 20, 2023.
