Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared four parliamentary seats vacant, shifting the balance of power in Ghana’s hung parliament.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had previously held a slight advantage with the support of Independent MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah.
Now, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds 136 seats, while the NPP has 135, down from their earlier 138 seats.
The MPs affected are:
1. Cynthia Morrison, NPP MP for Agona West, running as an independent.
2. Kwadwo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum, also contesting as an independent.
3. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, independent MP for Fomena, now running under the NPP.
4. Peter Kwakye-Ackah, NDC MP for Amenfi Central.
This decision came after former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu petitioned the Speaker, invoking Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution, which mandates that MPs vacate their seats if they leave the party under which they were elected or seek to remain in Parliament as independents.
