Illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” has become a pervasive issue in many parts of Ghana, causing substantial environmental degradation and threatening local livelihoods. In response to this ongoing crisis, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Akyemansa district in the Eastern region, Hon. Paul Asamoah Gyemah, has raised a fervent plea for government intervention to address the escalating problem of galamsey along the Pra River within his district.
Hon. Paul Asamoah Gyemah, in collaboration with a dedicated galamsey task force, recently initiated a bold operation to confront illegal miners who were actively exploiting the Pra River. The team’s efforts led to the successful dismantling and destruction of 15 illegal mining machines known as “changfei” that had been erected by these unlawful operators near the “Ensese Anglo village.”
Speaking passionately about the pressing issue, the DCE underscored the critical need for immediate government support to combat galamsey activities within the district. He voiced his concerns regarding the district’s financial limitations, which hinder its capacity to effectively address the escalating problem of galamsey. The illegal mining activities have had a profound impact on local farmlands and communities, necessitating swift and decisive action.
One disturbing aspect highlighted by the DCE was the growing involvement of foreign nationals in these illicit activities. This suggests that the issue of galamsey has transcended local boundaries and become a transnational concern. To address this, Hon. Paul Asamoah Gyemah proposed a comprehensive solution that involves government support for the military and air force to utilize helicopters for aerial patrols over river bodies. This strategic approach aims to disperse illegal miners and thwart their operations from a vantage point that was previously inaccessible.
The detrimental consequences of galamsey activities along the Pra River were validated by local farmers who cultivate crops along the riverbanks. These farmers shared their frustrations, shedding light on the negative impact of foreign illegal miners passing through their lands. Additionally, the pollution of the river due to galamsey operations has had adverse effects on their crops, leading to reduced yields and compromised quality.
The heartfelt plea from the Akyemansa District DCE emphasizes the urgency for coordinated efforts at various levels of government to address the persistent and destructive issue of galamsey. The need for safeguarding natural resources, preserving the environment, and protecting the livelihoods of local communities cannot be understated. As the situation escalates, the call for effective action becomes increasingly crucial.
the fight against galamsey requires collective determination and concerted action. The Akyemansa District DCE’s resolute stand against this environmental menace sets an example for the proactive approach needed to mitigate the far-reaching impacts of illegal mining. With government support, innovative strategies, and community involvement, there is hope for restoring the integrity of the Pra River and ensuring a sustainable future for the Akyemansa district and beyond.
