President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that he will enact the Conduct of Public Officers (CoPO) Bill before the end of his presidency.
At the Annual Ghana Bar Association Conference in Kumasi on September 9, he confirmed that the legislative process is advancing and that the bill will soon reach Parliament.
“The Conduct of Public Officers Bill has cleared the Cabinet Committee’s review and is now ready for the full Cabinet’s consideration before we forward it to Parliament. I am confident that we will complete it before I leave office,” he said.
This assurance comes in response to recent criticism from a coalition of CSOs, who expressed frustration over the Cabinet’s delay in approving the bill. In a joint press release on September 4, the coalition challenged the Cabinet’s assertion that current laws are sufficient and urged the government to expedite the bill’s progress.
The CoPO Bill, pending since 2008, aims to reform asset and liability declarations, address conflicts of interest, and establish a code of conduct for public officials.
