President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has launched the District Road Improvement Programme in Accra to enhance Ghana’s infrastructure.
According to Akuffo-Addo, this programme aims to upgrade the country’s road networks and a significant step in the government’s efforts to decentralise development.
“The DRIP will equip Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the necessary resources to repair and maintain roads.
This initiative aligns with the government’s decentralisation goals by empowering local authorities to implement significant improvements,” he explained.
Further, Akuffo Addp highlighted the crucial role of road infrastructure in driving economic growth and social progress.
He stated, “
Roads connect communities, support trade, and provide access to education and healthcare, ultimately improving the quality of life.”
Moreover, Akufo-Addo acknowledged that despite recent progress, many district roads remain in poor condition, hindering economic activities and development.
Additionally, he announced the deployment of 2,240 pieces of equipment, including motor graders, backhoes, rollers, wheel loaders, bulldozers, tipper trucks, concrete mixers, water tankers, and low beds.
To ensure the programme’s success, each MMDA will oversee the initiative with a four-member committee.
These committees will include technical officers from the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, along with a representative from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will chair these committees to ensure high standards and accountability.
