During the 2024 Founders’ Day speech on August 3, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo dismissed claims that a single individual founded Ghana.
In a televised address, he directly challenged the idea that Kwame Nkrumah alone established the country, emphasising that many people, including Joseph Casely Hayford and the British West African Nation Congress led by Thomas Hutton-Mills, played vital roles in Ghana’s journey to independence.
In addition,Akuffo-Addo acknowledged the contributions of various groups and unsung heroes while recognising Nkrumah’s significant role in the final stages of independence, which led to his commemoration with a memorial day despite the challenges of his leadership.
This follows Parliament’s 2019 designation of August 4 as Founders’ Day to honour collective efforts and September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
