Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman has clarified that the affirmative action bill has not yet reached the President during a press briefing.
She explained that the bill, which aims to address socio-cultural, political, economic, and educational imbalances to create a more equitable society, is still undergoing legal processes and will need some time before the President can sign it.
She also noted that this legislation requires the government to set progressive targets for achieving gender equality in public office, governance, and decision-making.
The targets set by the bill include achieving 30% gender equity by 2026, 40% by 2028, and 50% parity by 2030, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Reports indicate that Ghana’s Parliament passed the Affirmative Action Bill on July 30, 2024, after more than 20 years of discussions.
