Afenyo-Markin Criticizes Speaker For Indefinite Adjournment

Written by Sarah Boye

Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticised Speaker Alban Bagbin for indefinitely adjourning Parliament, supervising chaos, and undermining Ghana’s democratic processes.

In a media address, Afenyo-Markin, clarified that the absence resulted from a procedural failure, not negligence and the Clerk of Parliament did not print the agreed-upon Order Paper, a key document outlining the day’s agenda, which made it impossible for proceedings to continue.

Further, he argued that this administrative oversight unfairly portrayed the NPP caucus as neglecting their responsibilities. He emphasised that the root cause of the disruption was the procedural failure, not the absence of NPP MPs.

“Mr. Speaker’s decision today amounts to supervising chaos and tarnishing the image of our democracy,” Afenyo-Markin stated. He also criticised the opposition NDC for claiming that the majority skipped a so-called Business Committee meeting.

This follows the adjournment on Thursday, November 7, due to the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, which Speaker Bagbin blamed on a lack of business.
