Ghanaian singer Adina Thembi has argued that developing a genuine appreciation for highlife among music consumers will encourage more musicians to embrace the genre.
In her interview on Joy FM’s, she highlighted that many musicians would pursue highlife if listeners provided strong support.
We must intentionally promote highlife music to attract the younger generation. Most artists aim for hit songs, so if the industry supports highlife and makes it popular, musicians will be encouraged.
She added
“When people release highlife music, they should embrace it. We need to help it grow because in Ghana, people often follow popular trends. When a genre becomes popular, kids and media houses tend to promote it.
If they view highlife as outdated or unsuitable for parties and clubs, they’ll be discouraged. We need intentional support from both the industry and consumers. We should all embrace highlife music,”
Adina further stated that, although she explores various musical styles, she feels a natural connection to highlife from her upbringing.
