Sports Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed that authorities will close the Accra Sports Stadium for renovations after Ghana faces Chad in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 21, 2025.
In an interview, He acknowledged that the stadium, left unused since November 2024, has fallen into disrepair and is no longer suitable for matches.
“An assessment revealed major structural issues. The floodlights, held together by rusted knobs, are at risk of failing. The entire facility is deteriorating. We must shut it down for refurbishment and restore it to standard,” Adams said.
Additionally, he revealed that the upcoming match, the first at the stadium in four months, will serve as a farewell. Engineers have already declared the upper stand facing Ghana’s Independence Square unsafe, barring fans from that section.
