On Tuesday evening, 8 individuals, including two minors, drowned when a boat capsized on the Oti River as they returned from the Dambai market.
However, seven people were rescued, while three others were declared dead after an extensive search.
According to the Assembly Member for Dambai Lakeside, Emmanuel Atali, the Navy, NADMO, police, and civilians initiated an operation to recover the 3 persons after rescuing the survivors. However, they were found already dead.
The Chairman of the area’s boat operators, Clement Kwesi Checki, expressed deep sadness about the tragedy.
He said ,
“I am deeply grieved by the loss of lives due to the boat accident; my thoughts are with the bereaved families, and I pray to the Almighty to give them strength to withstand this immense loss.”
He added that the catastrophe occurred as travellers began using canoes to cross the Oti River from the market after the ferry became faulty.
The capsized boat, carries persons from Dambai towards Njari, a farming and fishing community in Krachi East Municipality.
