The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has reported a rise in online blackmail cases, with 226 victims losing GH₵112,209 in just six months.
In a press statement, Perpetrators use social media to build relationships, secretly record intimate video calls, and then blackmail victims with the footage and about 141 people filed reports between March and June.
The CSA urges people to be cautious about accepting friend requests from unknown individuals and to use strong passwords to protect their data.
Since the March 2024 alert, which highlighted a 254% increase in online blackmail cases compared to the previous year, the number of reports has continued to climb, leading to significant financial losses this year.
