The Forestry Commission has announced the 2023 hunting close season for forest reserves, effective from August 1, 2024, to December 1, 2024.
At the mini-launch of the 2024 close season in Busunu, Savannah Region, themed “Wildlife: A Heritage We Must Conserve,” Savannah Regional Minister Saeed Jibril Muhazu emphasised the urgent need to protect wildlife for both current and future generations.
He highlighted that wildlife and biodiversity are vital to our heritage and livelihoods, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting tourism, and preserving cultural heritage.
Mr. Muhazu expressed concern about the threats facing wildlife, particularly in Mole National Park, such as poaching, habitat destruction, climate change, and human conflicts.
He stated that the close season provides an opportunity to restrict harmful activities, allowing wildlife populations to recover and habitats to regenerate.
The Regional Minister also stressed the importance of raising awareness and education in conservation efforts. Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Sulemana Nyadia Nelson, called for urgent action to address climate change and protect forest cover and wildlife resources.
He noted that this issue extends beyond environmental concerns and impacts everyone, urging sustainable management practices to safeguard Ghana’s rich forests and wildlife, as demonstrated by Mole National Park.
This decision aligns with the Wildlife Conservation Regulation 1971, LI 685.
