Parliament Approves €1.5 Million Tax Waiver For E-Learning Labs

Written by Sarah Boye

Parliament has approved a €1.5 million tax waiver for the supply and installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in senior high schools.

This decision accompanies an €11.5 million commercial contract between the government and Televic Group N.V. for the project’s second phase, which aims to integrate ICT into education to enhance learning outcomes.

The Finance Committee, chaired by Okaikwei Central legislator Patrick Yaw Boamah, recommended the approval, emphasising the educational and socio-economic benefits.

Mr Boamah stated,

“The committee is satisfied that the request is in the right direction due to the educational sector’s gains and the socio-economic benefits.”

The committee urged the House to adopt the report and approve the €1,517,040 allocation for the e-learning laboratories in senior high schools.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson backed the waiver, acknowledging that while the opposition typically opposes tax waivers, this specific instance is justified due to its positive impact on education.

Mr Forson remarked,

“We often oppose tax waivers in principle, but certain tax waivers, such as this one for ICT equipment in schools, are important for learning.”

The project seeks to support, enhance, and optimise education delivery through ICT integration.
